Welcome to the 2012 Dragon*Con Fan Track listings!

Alternate History Track

Director: Cindy Macleod

Welcome to another exciting year of the Alternate History Track. Within our panels, you will find the fantastical and anachronistic worlds of steampunk, time travel, alternate history and historical romance, as portrayed in literature, music, film, fashion, and on television. You can find out how to get involved in historical reenacting and living history.  Learn about retro-futuristic dirigibles, submersibles and difference engines. You will see makers interpreting works of science fiction into actual working contraptions! Have you ever wanted to take a trip back in time to a world where gentility was commonplace and everyday objects were beautifully designed? If so, come visit us over the Labor Day weekend for an experience you’ll never forget.

1632 Mini-Con: We are pleased to also host the 1632 shared world mini-con in the Westin International A room. This shared world was originally created by Eric Flint and works on the premise of a town from West Virginia in 2000 being transported back in time to 1631 Germany.

Filk Singing

Director: Robby Hillard

Filk singing began life as a typographic error of “Folk Singing” in a convention program book back in the early 1960’s. Instead of correcting the mistake, a new form of music called “FiLK” was created.

Filk songs come in several varieties - parodies of popular songs with an SF theme (or fantasy or horror, etc.), original music with fantasy and/or sci-fi themes, and songs about any aspect of fandom.

This year's FiLK track will have concerts Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Open filking every night. Workshops, panels, performances in the FiLK track room, and moderated discussions.

Any performer interested in performing at Dragon*Con in general (and filk track specifically) is invited to submit an application online.

Please continue to check the following sites for the latest FiLK news: http://www.filk.dragoncon.org/ and http://www.dragonconfilk.com/.

Independent Film Track

Director: Matthew M. Foster

The place to be for filmmakers and film-lovers, with a combination of celebrity panels, instructional seminars, and Independent Film screenings in a juried competition.

For the film-lover, we’ll have a full slate of the very best short films and features on the fest circuit: twisted animation, spine-chilling horror, cutting edge fantasy, challenging science fiction, fast paced action, and all kinds of comedy are just a start. Hours of great films, often with the filmmakers in attendance for Q & As. Awards will be presented on Monday—you won’t want to miss it. (For more information on these festival shorts, or to submit a film yourself, check out www.filmfest.dragoncon.org.)

We’ll also have panels focused on your interest in film. Critics will examine the state of the art, filmmakers will inform you of future projects, and popular actors will tell their stories. Past speakers have included Dean Stockwell, James Hong, Tippi Hedren, Juliet Landau, Ernie Hudson, Bill Moseley, Doug Bradley, Edward James Olmos, and Brad Dourif.

For filmmakers, we’ll have speakers with insights you need. In the previous few years this has included directors and producers discussing their work, make-up and FX artists describing the tricks of the trade, festival directors explaining how to get your film before the public, storyboard artists expounding on how to save time and effort, and lawyers spelling out what you absolutely need to know. It’s like a year of film school in four days. Past speakers have included Charles Band (Full Moon Entertainment), Tom Savini, and George A. Romero.

Interested in becoming a filmmaker? We will have seminars with information on how to get started.  We’ll cover the basics of pre-production, lighting, camerawork, and post-production.

From early in the morning to well past midnight, it’s non-stop cinema. To learn more about what is going to happen this year, keep watching the D*C Indie Film website at www.filmfest.dragoncon.org.

Writers’ Track

Director: Nancy Knight

It was a dark and stormy night . Many writers were gathered in the dungeon called Manilla/Singapore. Many faced one direction, a Few glared back from the other. Suddenly, one in the middle spoke, asked a question of the Few. Others behind the table spoke in turn, sometimes enthusiastically, interrupting each other. Wisdom passed from the Few to the Many…A storm rumbled overhead, but the writers paid little heed, for the discussion riveted their attention to the front of the room.

Suddenly, there was enlightenment. One of the Many rose and querried…One among the Few answered. Then another. And another. More wisdom transferred from the Few to the Many… And, thus, Writer’s Track sustained the Many thirsting after knowledge. And, it was good.

Come one, come all…Writer’s Track is the place to be if your ambition is to become a published writer in any genre. We take on all comers…comics, gamers, novelists, screenwriters…and more.

Young Adult Literature

Director: Bev Kodak

If you are young — or just young at heart — be sure to come by and check out the Young Adult Literature track! Our programming focuses on the worlds of Young Adult SF & Fantasy, and will feature both literary and media guests.

For 2011, YA Lit is proud to host an appearance by Tom Felton (known to many as Draco Malfoy), with additional guests to be announced.
Tentative subjects for this year's panels include the break-through hit "The Hunger Games," the sudden interest in teenage dystopian fiction, alternative sexualities in YA, urban fantasy for teens, and the hero’s journey of Neville Longbottom.

The Young Adult Literature track will also feature an array of interactive programming, such as a late night photo scavenger hunt, a YA Lit costume contest, and the game "Are You A Deatheater?" And, of course, we will once again host the popular Yule Ball — this year featuring a fun '80's retro theme.

So whether your interest is in Harry Potter or "The Hunger Games,"
C.S. Lewis or Percy Jackson, the YA Lit track is the track to beat at Dragon*Con 2011!
