Dragon Con Superheroes

We are pleased to announce that the Dragon Con Superheroes, a community service project team for our members, volunteers, and staff will continue in 2018.  In its first four years, the Dragon Con Superheroes contributed nearly 2400 hours of community service in the months leading up to Dragon Con.  Projects included packing and sorting food items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, maintaining trails at Sweetwater Creek State Park, working the Walk to End Lupus Now, building community gardens with the ACFB, supporting the Lymphoma Walk, cleaning and spreading mulch in Piedmont Park, a school supplies drive and backpack packing event with For the Kid in All of Us, a toy drive and bingo event with Children's Healthcare, and hosting an Olympic Town booth for athletes and families with the Special Olympics of Georgia.  In all, about 275 Dragon Con fans and their family members worked on these nine projects.  We are looking forward to even more participation this year.

In celebration of our Superheroes’ contributions to the community, we will again host an exclusive celebration during the 2018 convention.  Additionally, all Dragon Con Superheroes participating in this year’s projects will receive a free Superheroes t-shirt designed by the talented Justin Gerard.

Event 1: Spring Cleaning with the Partnership Against Domestic Violence

  • When: March 24th
  • Where: Location will be provided to registered Superheroes
  • Time: 9a – 12n
  • THANK YOU to all volunteers who helped with the PADV Spring Cleaning Project. It was one of our best events to date! What wonderful work was completed for such an amazing organization!!

    PADV implements a holistic approach to ending intimate partner violence which not only supports survivors once abuse has occurred but also strives to prevent future violence. They do this by offering the following array of programs and services: emergency safe houses, 24-hour crisis lines, legal advocacy, outreach and prevention programs, supportive housing program, and support groups for women.

    Join the Superheroes as we help give a spring cleaning to their shelter. Projects may include:

    • Organize outside sheds
    • Weeding and cleaning outside areas
    • Landscaping project
    • Organize and clean clothing boutique
    • Deep clean dining room & kitchen
    • Deep clean kid’s playroom and halls

    Though PADV would love the chance to work with everyone who is interested in lending a hand, there are some qualifications that each volunteer must meet:

    • Shelter volunteers must be 18 years old or older. Due to state regulations, we are not allowed to have minors volunteer or accompany volunteers in our shelters.
    • If you are a survivor of intimate partner violence (IPV) or have experienced a loss due to IPV, we ask that you wait a minimum of 12 months before volunteering as a direct service volunteer.
    • Volunteer opportunities with PADV are NOT available for those looking to complete court-ordered community service.

    Event 2: Book Drive to Support Literacy Action

    Dragon Con is hosting a year-long book drive to collect new and gently-used books at all reading levels that can become a part of the organization’s library. Books will be collected at every Director and Volunteer meeting between now and the convention, at the convention, and through Dragon Con’s office at PO Box 16459 Atlanta, GA 30321-0459.

    Event 3: Literacy Action’s Family & Friends Day

    • When: April 22nd
    • Where: Coan Park, 1530 Woodbine Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30317
    • Time: 1p - 430p

    On April 22nd, the Superheroes will assemble at Coan Park to serve food and run games at Literacy Action’s Family & Friends Day. The event also serves as their Spring Student Recognition Day, celebrating the students and their accomplishments over the past semester.

    We need both costumed and non costumed support for the big event. Those Superheroes NOT in costume should report at 1p to help set up, while those in costume can arrive around 145p to make their way to the photo booth for pictures.

    Volunteers will help with set up and break down for the event, as well as, run games and face paint. A good time is sure to be had by all!!
