Alternate History Track

Director: Cindy Macleod

Welcome to the world of the Alternate History Track, debuting this year at Dragon*Con. Within our panels, you will find the fantastical and anachronistic worlds of steampunk, time travel, alternate history and historical romance, as portrayed in literature, music, film, fashion, and on television. You can find out how to get involved in historical reenacting and living history.  Learn about retro-futuristic dirigibles, submersibles and difference engines. You will see makers interpreting works of science fiction into actual working contraptions! Have you ever wanted to take a trip back in time to a world where gentility was commonplace and everyday objects were beautifully designed? Britain has inspired every aspect of American modern culture. It has opened the gates to media innovation since it’s BBC worldwide radio shows during WWII. In becoming the first country with a national television network, genres and fans were born! Dragon*Con’s British Science Ficition Media programming continues with this exploration of every facet, fad, and pop-culture idiom of everything British for con-goers.

The British Sci-Fi Media Track (commonly called the BritTrack) programming is broad and diverse, spreading across every medium (film, TV, comics, music, and literature) the Brit's have to offer. Come, stop by, and get sucked into the world of the BritTrack! Meet a huge fandom whose passions include Doctor Who, Torchwood, Blake's 7, The Watchmen, Red Dwarf, Monty Python, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Prisoner, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Neil Gaimen (Coraline), Robin Hood, Primeval, Life On Mars and other cultural legacies of the United Kingdom. Costuming

Director: Brian Holloway

It is another great year and we are striving to get bigger and better each year. The Costuming Track is back again this year and we are building on a few past successes and bringing in some new panels as well. As usual, we will have our Friday Night Costuming Contest along with Saturday’s Dragon-After-Dark as well. We have our collegiate costume panel returning and corsets will naturally be another big focus this year. And the usual basics of building and armor panels, but we also have some new things we are looking at this year.

We are going deeper into the subject of body-painting and airbrushing, bringing back our dentist friends to speak more on fangs and dental appliances, we have the Fairies coming back to talk about wings and things, but this year we are going retro as well STEAMPUNK makes its debut at the Costuming Track this year and we expect this to be a big hit. This section of fandom has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years and we want to help fandom create some new and exciting entries into this genre as well. And we are looking up into the sky to bring you……heroes. Whether it is the standard comic spandex-clad superhero or the newer versions in leather` and latex, we want to explore the how and whats to bringing your favorite hero to life. All of this…and a few surprises as well. And as always, we are open to your suggestions as well……so let us know what you would like to see and hold on tight for a GREAT 2009. Just drop us a note at http://costuming@dragoncon.org. Have a GREAT year --- Brian & Lee.

Filk Singing

Director: Robby Hillard

Filk singing began life as a typographic error of “Folk Singing” in a convention program book back in the early 1960’s. Instead of correcting the mistake, a new form of music called “FiLK” was created.

Filk songs come in several varieties - parodies of popular songs with an SF theme (or fantasy or horror, etc.), original music with fantasy and/or sci-fi themes, and songs about any aspect of fandom.

This year's FiLK track will have concerts Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Open filking every night. Workshops, panels, performances in the FiLK track room, and moderated discussions.

Independent Film

Director: Matthew M. Foster

The place to be for filmmakers and film-lovers, with a combination of feature screenings, filmmaker panels, and Independent Short Films in competition.

For the film-lover, we’ll have a full slate of the very best short films on the fest circuit: twisted animation, spine-chilling horror, cutting edge fantasy, challenging science fiction, fast paced action, and all kinds of comedy are just a start. Hours of great films, often with the filmmakers in attendance for Q & As. Awards will be presented on Monday—you won’t want to miss it. (For more information on these festival shorts, or to submit a film yourself, check out filmfest.dragoncon.org.)

We’ll also have panels focused on your interest in film. Critics will examine the state of the art, filmmakers will inform you of future projects, and popular actors will tell their stories. Past speakers have included Dean Stockwell, James Hong, Tippi Hedren, Juliet Landau, Ernie Hudson, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Edward James Olmos, and Brad Dourif. And don’t miss our late night panels on cult films: zombies and naughty nuns and yakuza, oh my!

For filmmakers, we’ll have speakers with insights you need. In the past few years this has included directors and producers discussing their work, make-up and FX artists describing the tricks of the trade, festival directors explaining how to get your film before the public, storyboard artists expounding on how to save time and effort, and lawyers spelling out what you absolutely need to know. It’s like a year of film school in four days. Past speakers have included Charles Band (Full Moon Entertainment), Tom Savini, and George A. Romero.

And let’s not forget our features. We show only a limited number, so each is something really special. Just in the last few years, attendees have be treated to the best in indie horror with the apocalyptic The Signal and the satiric Blood Car, the best in fantasy with Pirates of the Great Salt Lake, and the Sun Dance favorite, Forgiving The Franklins. Our focus on the most exciting Asian films has brought in the Korean supernatural thriller Spider Forest, the controversial Lady Vengeance, the original Ju-On movies (before they were available anywhere else in the U.S.), as well as Takashi Shimizu’s follow-up, the dream-like, Lovecraftian vision, Marebito.

From early in the morning to well past midnight, it’s non-stop cinema. To learn more about what is going to happen this year, keep watching the D*C Indie Film website at filmfest.dragoncon.org.

Space

Director: Lorraine (rain) Glynn

SPACE -The Final Frontier! Those are the words that first introduced many of us to the idea of living in space. Cool ships and aliens! That's where I want to be!

Well, technically we, as in human beings from the planet Earth, ARE living in space, but not many of us. Well why the frak not?! It's almost 2010! It took us a little over 10 years to get from launching a satellite that could do nothing but beep to landing men on the moon and having them spend a couple of days there. That's a pretty big technological leap in such a short time but 40 years later and manned space flight hasn't progressed very far. So what HAVE we been doing and when are we going to get back to the Moon? What about Mars? The Space Track will enlighten you. We'll tell you about all the various probes exploring our Solar System and what they've been discovering. In a few years we'll even know what's really happening with Pluto, our 9th planet that's not a planet. You'll see images of space like you never thought it could be. The rings and moons of Saturn, Jupiter's ever growing number of red spots and, yes, we've not forgotten Mars, the only other planet or moon that we know for sure has and does have water. We'll show you stars of all sizes and colors. Remnants of what used to be stars. And galaxies far, far away. Check out our Live Astronomy sessions and see what's happening these days with our Sun and tell one of our large Earth based telescopes what you want to see. Live - (minus however many million or billion light years it took for the light to reach our planet!).

That's just some of the incredible stuff you can see. Do you believe that there is intelligent life somewhere else in the universe? So does Dr. Seth Shostak and he'll tell you about how the scientific community is trying to find it at the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI). Every one's favorite space based telescope, Hubble, is getting a life extension but new space based telescopes have recently been launched or will be soon. Kepler launched in March and for the next 3.5 years will be searching for exo-Earths, the James Webb is getting closer to completion and we've got the people to tell you all about them. Did you know that many of our best sci-fi writers are science geeks themselves? Well it's true and one of the best, Timothy Zahn, will be teaming up with our own Les Johnson to talk about NASA, science education and MMO's!! We'll also bring back our usual cast of astronomical experts: Dr. William Keel, Dr. Keven Grazier, Dr. Pamela Gay and the Bad Astronomer himself, Dr. Phil Plait.

2009 is The International Year of Astronomy and there are events happening all over the world, all year long. Of course we're going to join in! Come check out the Space Track and we'll give you the universe!!

Keeping checking the Mad Scientist website for news updates and programing schedules as they are confirmed. Oh yeah, you can find information on jonnyX’s Science Track as well. See you in August. :-)

Writers’ Track

Director: Nancy Knight

It was a dark and stormy night . Many writers were gathered in the dungeon called Manilla/Singapore. Many faced one direction, a Few glared back from the other. Suddenly, one in the middle spoke, asked a question of the Few. Others behind the table spoke in turn, sometimes enthusiastically, interrupting each other. Wisdom passed from the Few to the Many…A storm rumbled overhead, but the writers paid little heed, for the discussion riveted their attention to the front of the room.

Suddenly, there was enlightenment. One of the Many rose and querried…One among the Few answered. Then another. And another. More wisdom transferred from the Few to the Many… And, thus, Writer’s Track sustained the Many thirsting after knowledge. And, it was good.

Come one, come all…Writer’s Track is the place to be if your ambition is to become a published writer in any genre. We take on all comers…comics, gamers, novelists, screenwriters…and more.
