The Legend of the Chôsen
The Legend of the Chôsen…
On its many visits to see the Great Phoenix, the Great Dragon always debated with its rather distant southern cousin. The cause of this latest flap of wings was due to the mass of soft little ape like creatures that tended to gather around whenever the two majestic creatures met. Amongst this small enlightened group were those who went to great lengths to pay homage to the many great stories that the Dragon shared with the Phoenix over the millennia. This faction called themselves…“Cosplayers.” These little beasties gathered in an annual festival they dubbed “Dragon’s Con,” where they paid the greatest tribute possible to the Dragon and his tales.
The Dragon felt that upon each of his visits, there should be a great contest to determine which “Cosplayer” honored the majestic creature most. The Phoenix was jealous of the “Dragon’s Con” and vowed to spoil its creation. Based on ancient text that dictated The Phoenix rules by Air and The Dragon rules by Fire, the Phoenix declared that there could be no contest unless a venue existed where a champion “Cosplayer” could be crowned amidst the two remaining elements, Earth and Water; and witnessed by a host of spirits of the deep. The Phoenix laughed for he knew that this land of towers known as “Host Hotels” contained many muddy rivers and ponds, but nary a body of water great enough for the great spirits to reside.
The Dragon’s despair was great and he spent many years searching for the perfect combination of Earth and Water. On his 28th visit, the Dragon morphed into his human form and followed a large group of “Cosplayers” outside of the towers. They wound through the concrete jungle until finally arriving at a magical venue called The Georgia Aquarium. It was a wondrous place where he walked its many halls, entranced by what he encountered. One particularly dark hallway beckoned to the desperate Dragon and he followed the strange walkway to its end. There he came to a brilliant and magical window with a small child standing alone, staring through in wonder. He turned to the Dragon and said “Isn’t it wonderful. It’s like a great ocean right here on Earth.” The Dragon stared, dumfounded, at this great sage as a vast silhouette passed over them. It was the shadow from of one of the greatest Spirits of the Deep; and it was indeed here on Earth. Behold…the Whale Sharks Four.
Thunderstruck by this occurrence, the Dragon decreed, “Here! It is here that I shall gather these great costumed Dragon Spawn. Here my “Cosplayers” will congregate. Here will I bring forth my Chôsen. With a roar of satisfaction, the Dragon took to the sky, eager to inform the Phoenix that his plan had been thwarted.
On this 29th gathering of the Dragon we declare that the most faithful shall enter the great Sea on Earth known as the Georgia Aquarium and shall be witnessed by the Sprits of the Deep, who will decide the first of the Chôsen. On September 5th, Dragon Con presents The Chôsen, the greatest Cosplay Contest on Earth and Sea.
