The Brave and the Bold

Saving the day in not-so-little ways

Dragon Con Superheroes

The Dragon Con Superheroes is a community service project team for our members, volunteers, and staff to give back to our local community. Since 2014, Dragon Con Superheroes have contributed more than 3,100 hours to Atlanta-area non-profits.

Projects have included packing and sorting food items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, maintaining trails at Sweetwater Creek State Park, working the Walk to End Lupus Now, building community gardens with the ACFB, supporting the Lymphoma Walk, cleaning and spreading mulch in Piedmont Park, a school supplies drive and backpack packing event with For the Kid in All of Us, a toy drive and bingo event with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, delivering more than 8,500 books to Literacy Action and supporting their Friends and Family day, giving a woman’s shelter a top-to-bottom spring cleaning for Partnership Against Domestic Violence, and hosting a booth for athletes and families with the Special Olympics of Georgia. In all, about 290 Dragon Con fans and their family members have volunteered on the Superheroes projects.

In celebration of our Superheroes’ contributions to the community, we will again host an exclusive celebration during the 2019 convention. Additionally, all Dragon Con Superheroes participating in this year’s projects will receive a free Superheroes t-shirt designed by the talented Dave Cook.

Have questions? We have answers!

Event 1: Supporting Open Hand Atlanta

Join the Dragon Con Superheroes as we partner with an organization new to our Superheroes but near and dear to the hearts of many Atlantans, Open Hand Atlanta. Open Hand helps people prevent or better manage chronic disease through Comprehensive Nutrition Care, which combines home-delivered meals and nutrition education as a means to reinforce the connection between informed food choices and improved quality of life. The Superheroes will work to prepare and package meals, as well as pack market baskets, deliver meals, and create Valentines for the week’s deliveries.

Thanks to all our amazing superheroes who came out to volunteer for last year’s event with Open Hand, we were able to pack 1429 meals and 155 pantry bags, vegetable bags, and fruit bags.  We look forward to exceeding these numbers this year!

Event 3: Sorting and Packing Medical Supplies with MedShare

Join the Dragon Con Superheroes as we partner with an organization new to our Superheroes but near and dear to the hearts of many Atlantans, MedShare. MedShare is a 501c(3) humanitarian aid organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of people, communities and our planet by sourcing and directly delivering surplus medical supplies and equipment to communities in need around the world. MedShare helps increase health system capacity and drives sustainability by providing biomedical equipment training and service to healthcare organizations and medical professionals serving populations in need. MedShare’s deliveries of vital medical supplies and equipment have decreased our nation’s carbon footprint and brought health, healing and the promise of better lives to 100 countries and countless patients.

In this project, we will have a rare opportunity to save lives through sorting and packing medical supplies. Our volunteer session will include a tour of the facility, an orientation on how to identify, sort, and re-box medical supplies, and a short wrap-up sharing the countries that will receive the supplies we package, the total number of boxes created, and the number of pounds of product sorted during our session.

This project does have an age restriction of 13+. Anyone between the ages of 13 – 18 needs to have a chaperone join them for the event.
